If there is one name, which could be used as the synonym of Yoga today, then, without a doubt, it will be of Swami Ramdev. Baba ji, as he's known popularly, has presented and promoted the most accepted and widely popular format of Yoga to the world. His aim is to see Rog Mukt Bharat (disease free India).
He is one of the founders of Diyva Yoga Mandir Trust, which aims at promoting and popularizing Yoga and Ayurveda, our ancient traditional school of medication.
He is the first Yogi to have used the mass communication medium to promote Yoga art with such great success and acceptability. More than 80 million people follow him and his teachings. They attend his shivirs (camps), watch him on various TV channels and buy CDs and DVDs specified at particular aspects of Yoga. He has conducted his camps in almost all the states of India and has even started establishing himself in many countries of Asia, Europe, America, Africa, and Australia
Millions have benefited from his very famous exercises of Pranayamas. Apart from the general problems like blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, spondylitis, fat reduction, people have recovered from many life-endangering illnesses like cancer in their initial stage of the problems.
The set of Pranayamas he preach are very easy to follow for all the age groups. He is known to have made Yoga assessable to the people of all class and ethnic backgrounds. He makes it very clear that Patanjali Yoga as a practice has nothing to do with Hindu religion and it's the world's most premier disciplines of medical treatment. Today not only Hindus but also people of all religion, including Muslims, consider it very acceptable and perform it to get benefited.
Swami Ramdev's mass acceptance is credited to the way he deliver his speech which contain the elements of nationalism, secularism and his strong objection to the MNCs working in India. His belief of free health treatment to the needy makes him all the more popular.
In 2006, Swami Ramdev pioneered the establishment of Patanjali Yog Peeth at kankhal, Haridwar, Uttarakhand. He aims to make it the world's biggest centre of Yoga and Ayurveda, where people of all background can be treated with equal attention and care. He is also the Vice-Chancellor of the recently founded Patanjali Yog Peeth University. This university will focus on the research and treatment of many serious health related problems and develop scholars of this art, which would carry forward the vision of this institute and its founder, baba Ramdev.
